The Queensland Government's commercial plantation forest grower, Forestry Plantations Queensland, is independently certified to the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS).
AFS certification recognises Forestry Plantations Queensland as a leading environmental agency as well as a premier forest management organisation.
It also gives Queensland's timber industry access to a "chain of custody" process for green labelling its products as coming from sustainably managed forest resources when sourced from Forestry Plantations Queensland.
The Australian Forestry Standard was developed in 2002 by the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in partnership with the National Association of Forest Industries, forest growers and the then Plantation Timber Association of Australia.
It is the first Australian standard of its kind and sets criteria for sustainable forest management from an economic, social, environmental and cultural perspective.
Mutual recognition of the AFS with other similar national schemes by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) confers international status on the AFS.
AFS certification enhances Forestry Plantations Queensland's already excellent environmental credentials, including its earlier certification (as DPI Forestry) to the international environmental standard ISO 14001.
The AFS goes further than ISO 14001 by focusing on sustainable forest management, addressing aspects such as maintaining biological diversity, ecosystem health and vitality, soil and water quality and protecting indigenous cultural and spiritual values.

In support of the AFS Chain of Custody Certification Scheme, Forestry Plantations Queensland provides the following information to help assist Chain of Custody (CoC) certification holders to verify that the timber they have purchased from Forestry Plantations Queensland has been harvested from a plantation that is certified under the AFS Certification Scheme.
Please note that the pdf files containing the list of plantation compartment numbers is updated at the beginning of each financial year to reflect the addition of compartments established during the preceding year and the removal of compartments harvested during the preceding year.
The numbering system used for compartments is as follows:
As at 30 June 2009, Forestry Plantations Queensland’s defined forest area consisted of 299,128 hectares of State plantation forest and 33,169 hectares of freehold title land. The area of State plantation forest that Forestry Plantations Queensland declares as being defined forest areas is itself defined in the Forestry Plantations Queensland Regulation 2006.
The location of the defined forest area is displayed on the maps below.
