Hazard reduction burning commences

15 May 2009

With the onset of winter weather, Forestry Plantations Queensland has begun hazard reduction burning in many of its State Plantation Forests.

Hazard reduction burning (sometimes referred to as “cool burning” or “controlled” burning”) clears organic forest undergrowth and other organic forest litter in plantations to reduce the potential for, and severity of wildfires during summer months.

This protects Queensland’s huge investment in plantation forestry and local communities and community infrastructure.

The burns are conducted when conditions are favourable, such as after rain and when prevailing winds help keep smoke away from population centres and major roads.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution if they encounter smoke hazards near plantation forests, reducing speed and turning on their lights if necessary.

Members of the public can telephone “000” at any time if they are concerned about fires in or threatening plantation forests.
